FreeCAD detects which operation is needed based on whether the boundary is before or beyond the clicked point.

Step-by-step

1. Activate Draft → Modification → Trim / Extend.
2. Click on the wire to trim or extend — click the part to keep for trim, or click the end to extend.
3. Click on the boundary edge to trim/extend to.
